Custom Build Riffle
Build your own riffle
It is exiting, fun and a challenge to create your own riffle. A rifle that should fulfill all your demands and desires, a rifle that through many years to come should give you a great satisfaction, when you practice shooting or being out hunting.
Before you start specifying which parts you are going to use, you got to reflect on which field of application you want your riffle to fulfill
Examples on questions: Are you going to use the rifle both for hunting and target shooting? Which type of hunting, shooting do you enjoy most? Do I want a single shot rifle or one with a magazine? A rifle with a single shot action is more stiff in its construction and therefore a rifle with a single shot action has a better precision. Do you hand load your own ammunition or do you buy factory loaded ammunition, Or do you want to have the opportunity to buy factory loaded ammunition if you need?
When you have answered the above questions plus your own, then you can start specifying: The first question that comes up is, which caliber should I choose? If you want to buy loaded ammunition for practicing at a reasonable cost, then you don't have so many calibers to choose upon, Win 308 and 30-06 are the most common calibers, there is absolute no reasons to underestimate these fine calibers whit great possibilities to variety. I have used both calibers for hunting during many years and I am very pleased with both. If you are going to load your own ammunition, then you have a great variety of calibers to choose from according to the answers to your questions. In 6 mm. (class 2 in Sweden) you have a lot of fine calibers, PPC, Norma BR, 243 win and Norma XC. If you have chosen a action with magazine, then you ought to choose either 243 win or Norma XC. In class 1 in Sweden, you have 6,5-284 (approx. 100 m higher velocity than 6,5x55 Swedish), 708 Rem, 7 mm. Rem Mag, 308 Win, 30-06 and 300 Win Mag, there are many more, just let your imaginations fly. Barrel, action, etc: The barrel and action are the important components in a gun, here there is absolute no reason to save and scrape. I will recommend a precision action to be used, constructed and manufacture whit the same principles as a bench rest action. It will guarantee the highest quality and tolerances and secure that the barrel gets the best foundation and that the forces when firing the gun, will be spread even over the foundation surface and secure that there will be no oblique forces between the barrel, action and bolt. You should choose a barrel in match grade quality, as heavy as your requirement allows "Big Is Best", e.g. a barrel suitable for most types of hunting is contour #4, this means that a barrel 68 cm (27") long in caliber .30 will have a weight of approx 1,6 kg. The quality of the stock is important for the perfect shot and there are a lot of stocks to chose from on the market. What you should think of is that wooden stocks and some composite stocks need a pillar bedding. A pillar bedding costs approx. SEK 1800-2200 if you don't do it yourself. Today there are a lot of stocks who comes whit a milled aluminum bedding, I prefer these stocks with a minimum of adjustment, for example Bell&Carlson and H&S. What's left is to chose a trigger and here a Jewell trigger is a "obviously" choice if you have a Remington standard on your action, but you can find suitable triggers at a lower cost.
